Hattie Blevins Obituary

Hattie Mae Cheseman Blevins peacefully transitioned to her eternal resting place on Saturday, February 21, 2026. She was born on November 26, 1938, in Warwick County (Newport News), Virginia, to the late Robert and Mable Cheseman.  With love and gratitude for a life well lived, we celebrate the homegoing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.

She was a mother figure and willingly shared her faith and her words of wisdom with her family, friends, and with anyone who would listen. She found great joy in reading her Bible, praying with others, and offering encouraging words. Her life was reflected in the songs she loved and would sing. Songs like “I’ve been running for Jesus a long time and I’m not tired yet”, “His eye is on the Sparrow and I know He watches me”, and “I don’t feel no ways tired, I’ve come to far from where I started from, nobody told me that the road would be easy, but I don’t believe He brought me this far to leave me”

Hattie received her education in the Newport News Public School System.  Throughout her life, she always showed her love and how much she cared for others. She believed in honest work and had a strong work ethic, no matter what the field of employment was. She was a domestic worker and worked for L.S Ayers. While living in Indianapolis, she was involved in Adopt-A-Block Crime Watch and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful.

Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. She put God first in her life and had strong faith. She was a devoted member of New Revelation Missionary Baptist Church in Indianapolis, Indiana, where she served as head of the Usher Board. She later united in fellowship with Truestone Primitive Baptist Church, where she continued her service as head of the Usher Board and joined the choir. She looked upon her church home as a place of worship, service, and love.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. William Blevins; her sisters, Lottie Wright, Mabel Taliferro, and Rachel Fuller; her brothers, James Cheseman (Cossie) and George Cheseman (HP).

She leaves behind to cherish her memories, seven children, Vincent Cheseman (Jackie), Pamela Riley, Debra Harris (Gavin Sr.), William Riley (Delcie), Yarnay Riley, Ronald Riley (Eyvette), and Carol Thompson (James); grandchildren, Latasha Horne (Leroy), Tyjuan, Sr. (Kalonni), Gavin, Jr. (Jacinta), Corey (Ciearra), Jeffrey, Jr. (Morgan), Hayven Bacon, Malik Riley, Malachi Riley, Malcolm Riley, Amani Riley, Meera Thompson, and Mya Thompson; great-grandchildren, Jayden, Lauren, Jacob, Levin, Wilden, Kaylyn, Kaysie, Tyjuan, Jr., and Crue; her devoted twin sister Nettie Rainey, sisters-in-law, Inez Burton, Gloria Hawkins, and Vera Graves; her loving nephew Martin “Deet” Taliferro; a close friend like a daughter Jane Rogers; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Her journey here is complete, but her love, faith, and legacy will continue to live on in those who were blessed to know and love her.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 28, 2026, at Whiting's Funeral Home, with a viewing beginning at Noon.
